I have been told that I should never have my blood pressure taken, or blood drawn from the side of my surgery, which was the left side. I have recently been diagnosed with another breast cancer on my right side and will be having surgery next week. Where can they take my blood pressure and lab draws from now?

I have had bilateral mastectomies and my centinal (sp?) node (left side only) removed. I was never told not to have my BP taken. A friend who had lumpectomies mentioned it to me once and I then inquired of my physician. I was told that it could cause discomfort on the surgery site. In my case it does not so I allow them to have their way with me on either side!

According to Dr. Cullinane, it is not usually a problem to take your blood pressure or blood draws from your sugergy side, unless you have had an axillary node dissection (multiple lymph nodes removed). In the case of node dissection it is best to avoid that particular side and to protect that arm and hand from all possible harm.
