- Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
After a mammogram discovered an abnormality in my breast, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma on December 22, 2005. My world fell apart. I was so scared.
I was facing the unknown, and the unknown is the worst part of it all. All I could think about was that I would not be here for my husband or my four beautiful granddaughters. How could that be?
Then, a few weeks later I was told that I was going to be a grandma again, this time to a little boy. That knowledge, my four granddaughters, my husband Dave, and my family gave me the fight that was needed. After a few surgeries aimed at trying to save my breast, I elected to have a bi-lateral mastectomy on March 15, 2006.
I was so fortunate to have my special angels, Dr. John West and Dr. John Link for my surgeries and my medical care.
Thus began my healing. Prior to that time in my life, I never would have believed that the word cancer would change my life for the better.
I am now a Breastlink Angel and have the privilege of talking with patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of my strong desire to share the support I received, I try to help newly diagnosed women along their journey through breast cancer.
This cancer of mine gave me the opportunity to meet and become friends with some wonderful ladies that I would never have met. I pray that someday very soon they will all also be breast cancer survivors. My husband, Dave, works with the husbands of women going through this journey. Some of his story is included on the back cover of the calendar.
When Jerry started taking the photos, I threw my hands in the air in pure joy. All I could say was…
“I am thankful!!!”
