I met with two surgeons and, after two consultations with Dr. Lisa Curcio, my choice was easy. With her calm, direct, compassionate manner I quickly felt the comfort and trust you need to have with your doctor. When I heard her story of being a breast cancer survivor herself, well, that was all I needed to hear.

I asked three different people for surgical referrals and Dr. Lisa Curcio’s name was mentioned all three times. She was obviously well respected and it made sense to me to go with a surgeon specializing in breast cancer.
Not only did I kick cancer’s butt, I did it surrounded by an incredible group of family and friends that supported me every step of the way. And when Dr. Lisa Curcio and my medical oncologist took over, I knew that I had two additional guardian angels looking over me! Their dedication, unwavering support and relentless determination to make sure I won this battle was nothing short of extraordinary.

Dr. Lisa Curcio – Breast Surgical Oncologist

One of South Orange County’s only female surgical oncologists, Dr. Curcio has devoted her life’s work to the education, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Lisa Curcio, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist. She currently is the medical director of breast surgery for Breast Laguna Hills. Her personal experience as a breast cancer patient offers her patients a unique clinical perspective. Dr. Curcio has spent her career committed to helping patients manage risk to prevent cancer and to maintain an optimal quality of life before, during and following a cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Curcio attended George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C., where she also completed a residency in general surgery. She was the recipient of the competitive U.S. Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program. She was invited to fellowship training in cancer surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.

During her military commitment, Dr. Curcio served in the military as Chief Surgical Oncologist at Keesler Medical Center in Biloxi, Mississippi. She was involved in residency training at Keesler and cared for both active duty, retired military personnel as well as military veterans at the Biloxi VA Hospital. During her military commitment, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced firsthand the emotional and physical impact of breast cancer treatment.

After completion of her military commitment, Dr Curcio returned to Southern California in a general surgery practice. Her breast cancer experience served as an inspiration to focus her practice on the disease she experienced herself. This led her to transition her practice in 2005 to care primarily for patients with benign conditions and cancer diagnoses as a breast dedicated surgical oncologist.

Throughout her career, because of her training and personal experience, Dr. Curcio has worked with breast cancer patients. She focuses her practice on the prevention of cancer with genetic testing and lifestyle management. She is passionate about educating patients and advancing breast cancer awareness and prevention outside the clinic, in the community and at national meetings.

From 2003 to 2004, she served as program director for Susan G. Komen Orange County and remains involved with Komen outreach efforts. She is on the board of Kids Konnected, a nonprofit that helps children of cancer patients deal with the emotional fallout of a cancer diagnosis. She frequently delivers educational lectures to patient and physician groups. Dr. Curcio also has a strong background in breast cancer research, contributing to dozens of peer-reviewed articles.

Addressing Some Questions About Breast Cancer

October 5, 2015|0 Comments

One of the things I love most about my job is the opportunity afforded to me to be involved in educating patients. Every year, Susan G. Komen® Orange County hosts a series of educational lectures to help patients better understand breast cancer. Events such as these offer me an opportunity to reach out to many at once. This year, I was honored to speak as part of this series to help answer some questions about breast cancer. For those who were unable to attend, some of the topics discussed are addressed below. […]
