When a woman chooses to remove the tumor with a rim of normal tissue rather then remove the whole breast, that is referred to as breast conservation surgery.
There are special techniques utilized to preserve the contour of the breast after removal of the cancerous tissue. The smaller the tumor, the more breast tissue can be preserved. The goal is to remove the cancerous tissue safely while still preserving the beauty of the breast.

When a woman chooses to remove the cancerous tumor with a rim of normal tissue rather then remove the whole breast, we refer to that as "breast conservation surgery" or "lumpectomy". After a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she will decide whether a lumpectomy or mastectomy (removal of the entire breast) is her best option. Many women have a great fear regarding the surgical portion of their treatment. They think that their treatment will require surgery that deforms the appearance of their breast. There are special techniques utilized to preserve the contour of the breast after removal of the cancerous tissue. The goal is to remove the cancerous tissue safely while still preserving the beauty of the breast. I utilize surrounding normal tissue to reconstruct the defect. As a surgeon who specializes in breast cancer surgery, it is my passion to advance these techniques and to provide my patients the optimal cosmetic result.
