When Should Women Start Breast Cancer Screening?

There is a lively debate within the medical community to establish standards for when women should start receiving mammograms. This also extends to how frequently follow-up mammograms should be performed. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a panel of experts that recommends health care standards to Congress and others, made a very controversial decision in 2009. They said women between the ages of 50 to 74 should get a breast cancer screening mammogram every two years. They also stated women under 50 should talk to their doctor to evaluate, based on their personal risk, if a screening mammogram was appropriate for them.

This decision caused waves of protest from numerous […]

The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness

Despite being a highly publicized disease in this country, far too many American women do not properly understand their personal risks of developing breast cancer. The American Cancer Society projects that 40,030 Americans will die from breast cancer in 2013.

Although not every life will be saved with early detection, and some types of breast cancer are more serious than others (see Dr. John Link’s recent blog post for more information), detecting breast cancer at an early stage can lead to a better patient prognosis. Recent data from the National Cancer Institute reinforces the role early detection can play to improve a patient’s prognosis. 5-year relative survival rates […]

What are Dense Breasts?

What are dense breasts? Women are increasingly asking this question as the topic of breast density receives attention from the media, state legislatures and Congress.

On April 1, 2013 California became the fifth state to require imaging centers to notify women if they have dense breast tissue (as revealed in a screening mammogram). Approximately 50 percent of women who get a screening mammogram now receive a mammography report indicating they have dense breast tissue. Mammography reports for patients with dense breast tissue will also relay that it may be more difficult to detect potentially cancerous lesions in their screening mammogram.

Preventive Mastectomy

A preventive mastectomy is an option for women to dramatically reduce their chance of getting breast cancer. The surgical procedure removes all breast tissue found in one or both breasts before any breast cancer has been detected.

Although thousands of women face this decision every year, Angelina Jolie’s recent preventive mastectomy personal story captured the hearts imagination of the media, public and numerous breast cancer advocacy organizations. Her story will hopefully lead women to inquire about their personal risk of developing breast cancer.

Information can be immensely empowering. If a woman is identified as being at high risk of developing breast cancer (Breastlink’s Risk Assessment Program) we strongly recommend she consult […]
