Breast cancer stories of hope can often help women who may be going through a similar experience. Sherry’s story as a survivor of invasive ductal carcinoma was in the March chapter of the 2014 Breastlink Angels calendar.

Sherry K. | Breast Cancer Stories of HopeIn 2004 when I walked through the doors of Breastlink I was welcomed with open arms. Dr. John West began immediately, doing all of the tests, from the mammogram, to biopsy, CT and PET scans.

I was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of my left breast, and immediately began dealing with the unknown.

I can’t say I wasn’t scared to death, because I was petrified, but I knew I was in the best place I could be. From the front desk to the nursing staff to Dr. West, a peace came over me no matter what I was there for. Besides having all of the tests right at the Center, there is always a volunteer to sit with you that has been through the same thing. You can call them angels.

I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma of my left breast. Dr. West and I decided that it would be best for me to have a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. He asked me if I wanted reconstruction, and I responded, “I can’t think about that right now. I can live without a boob. I just want to live.”

Dr. West knew that he had his hands full, but he guided me through. Almost 10 years later I am still cancer free. I experienced a miracle and my life was changed forever. Here I am and I want to give back in any way that I can to help others who are facing the same journey. I became a volunteer with Breastlink.

I volunteer with Breastlink and go on speaking engagements as often as I can. In addition, my husband, Bill, is a speaker and group leader for the Men’s Support Group. You can read a few words from him on the back cover of the calendar.

In 2012, our daughter, Ginger, gifted us with our first grandchild, Scarlett Rose, who is the joy of our lives. It is such a blessing to experience the joy and excitement of life through her. I am so thankful to be here, and have the privilege of participating in her life, and in the lives of each person going through the journey I traveled. If I can support one person, I am blessed.

Be the best you can be for yourself and someone else. And take time to play – with your loved ones. It’s a great stress reliever, a great healer, and one of the most treasured activities you can do.

This is our fifth year doing this calendar and we appreciate your support in buying our calendar. It is truly a labor of love for all who are involved.

Live Long and Prosper.
