Diagnosis – March 2010
Stage 2 Triple Negative Breast Cancer IDC
Two years later I can truly say that “LIFE IS GOOD”! Breast cancer has forever changed my life. I consider myself lucky and am grateful every single day.
The “uninvited” guest to my party called Life…
Having breast cancer for me was like hosting an uninvited guest who had overstayed its welcome from the moment it arrived. Some events in our lives are out of our control, I obviously did not plan to have breast cancer…who does!?!
I was 39-years-old when I was diagnosed with Stage 2 IDC Triple Negative Breast Cancer. My life was a party and I had an uninvited guest to tend to. So the bump in the road began…..eight rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a bilateral mastectomy with tissue expansion & reconstruction. I am also BRCA2 positive.
After the shock wore off and reality set in, I accepted my bump in the road. As it turns out, it was more a life lesson. Whether it was chemo, surgery, doctor appointments, procedures…whatever it was…I wanted to arm myself with knowledge and I did. Knowledge is power, but so is being positive. Don’t get me wrong, staying positive wasn’t always easy.
At times the word positive seemed so foreign to me, but I joined a wonderful support group…an “AMAZING” group of strong, positive, courageous woman who helped me to live and thrive with my cancer. They taught me to become my own BREAST FRIEND. I became a volunteer with the encouragement, training and support of Ginny Pepin.
It feels great to be able to give back some of the love and support that has been given to me. I know firsthand how important and meaningful that support is because I received so much of it during my treatment and continue to receive it. I will forever be grateful to all the dedicated and compassionate Breastlink medical team, Dr. John Link, Donna Valentine, Dr. John West & Dr. Justin West, the staff, the wonderful volunteers and all of the special and courageous women whom I have had the pleasure of meeting through this journey.
I am so blessed to have loving and supportive family and friends who are with me every step of the way. I couldn’t have made it through this journey without you: my husband who is my “Rock”, my 2 beautiful and strong sons who are my “Inspiration”, my mother who is my “Strength”, my sisters, brother & brother –in-law who are always there to “Encourage”, my nephews who keep me “Laughing”, my father who is my “ANGEL” up in heaven, my whole family, friends, daycare kids, moms & dads you are the “Best Cheerleading Team” and last, but certainly not least….my beautiful “Warriors” Christina, Monica & Nahid, we did it!!!
…That uninvited guest is gone now ~ hopefully for good!
Here’s to Staying Strong, Staying Positive, Laughing and To Parties … lots of them!
